I'm in the middle of making a comic where the hero throws a business card like shuriken. I've been trying different way to draw the flying card and I haven't been happy with the results. Google has failed me. Any ideas? I don't want the "Gambit-look" I want the card to spin like a throwing knife or like a weaponized business card.

Thanks, guys.

Does the card need to be readable in the frame?

Just draw the card's outline from two or three different angles. Imagine it yaw around the center and draw the outline at 0, 60, and -60 degrees. Pick one of those outlines to be the dominant one and erase the lines that go through that shape.

Thanks Smile Can you show me an example? I'm really having trouble visualizing this. Would the same technique beused if it was, let's say, a fountain pen?

And, no. The card will be readable in the next frame Smile

Sorry I dunno what "Gambit-look" means.

This bit of nonsense was done in SketchUp in a couple of minutes, turning the cards 30 degrees and moving them 2 card lengths apart from each other. (Click thumbnail to see bigger version.)

Gambit was (is?) one of the X-men. His mutant power is to charge inert items with excess kinetic energy so they explode on contact with his targets. Artists general depict him throwing playing cards (his fave missile) as if he were launching darts or tiny rockets.

Nice! And a possible sound effect: whupwhupwhupwhupTHUNK!

I think the Gambit look would be you see only one image of the card, with the swoosh motion lines behind it indicating its fast straight movement.

Ooh! I like this. Is there a way to make this look faster?

Reduce the spacing so the turns overlap. The closer in linear space the rotations are, the faster it looks like the card is spinning. Speed lines encasing the path will tend to visually increase the rotational speed instead of decreasing the linear velocity.

In a forum full of cartoonists, in a thread asking "how do I draw this," there's only one picture?

Aren't you guys visual people?

I'm so surprised that this thread is full of describing how to draw something rather than posting different examples of how to do it.

Dude, I'm a writer. Also, I'm pretty sure there's a UN resolution on file somewhere that authorizes anyone who wants to nuke Houston if I ever try to draw again.

You're excused for the good of the nation, then.

What about the rest of you? Huh?! Huuuh?!?

It also takes time, something in rare supply. A good written description should be enough.
